We had a wonderful dinner at this lovely Japanese restaurant in the Tangletown area of Minneapolis. First, they have a great cocktail list. I had the wasabi whisper, which was their riff on a martini - Japanese gin, vermouth, yuzu bitters, served with a wedge of black garlic. This is a great cocktail. We also tried a completely crazy cocktail made with vodka, gin, sake, a type of Japanese soda, and matcha. It was super interesting, and actually quite good. They also have a great selection of sakes, and wine. We started with the shrimp tempura. The batter was crispy, and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. We took the recommended path of getting 4 hand rolls, which come with miso soup, a small salad, and edamame. I particularly liked the unagi roll and the scallop roll. Everything was fresh and tasty. They have a small selection of desserts. We opted for what was sort of a waffle filled with sweet red bean paste and shaped like a fish. How awesome is that! It is served with a scoop of excellent vanilla ice cream. It was perfect. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable. The place has the usual quiet feel of Japanese restaurants. The menu is somewhat limited, but what they do, they do very well indeed. I definitely will go back!! Soon!!

This is what Minneapolis has been missing! The food, service, and vibe is so on point, and it reminded me of being in Japan. The vibe is modern and elevated yet still friendly and approachable. We tried almost all the hand rolls and everything was excellent - very fresh, high quality, simple yet delicious. The kitsune udon, miso soup, and ebi tendon were also very very good. The frozen Kirin Ichiban was a treat! Will definitely go back. It was a nice date night out, and we'll also feel comfortable bringing our kids.

The cocktails are delightful, elegant and strong! the food was delicious, using high quality ingredients and clearly made with care. The tofu served with the kitsune Udon soup was some of the best I've ever had (photo is a bit messy because I ate some before thinking to snap a pic). I also can't wait for warmer weather to come back and enjoy the patio!

I never write reviews for restaurants. I just got home from Nokko and couldn’t be happier. Attentive service, fresh and flavorful everything! Great sake and drinks. Very reasonable combo meals with soup, salad, edamame and hand rolls. I’m already craving my next meal there!

Nokko House is such an exciting new addition to the area. The service was phenomenal, especially for a newer restaurant, and everything we ordered was flawless. The vibe is very cool and zen, and it’s surprisingly kid friendly without losing that elevated feel. The hand roll sushi is so much fun and such a unique offering. The combos make it easy to try different temaki and everything was fresh and delicious. We also tried the Ichiban frozen beer and it was awesome, really unique and definitely worth ordering. The cocktails were great too. Food-wise, the udon was a standout. The broth was probably the best I’ve ever had. The chicken tempura was fantastic, light, crisp, and so flavorful. The salmon tartare was to die for and perfect for sharing. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion.

I’ve been waiting for so long for this spot to open and it didn’t disappoint. Interior is calm, beautiful and so very thoughtfully designed and furnished. The menu is small and specialized and there was definitely something for everyone in my group. I adored the seaweed salad, tempura and hand rolls! Can’t wait to come back and try the rest of the offerings.

The temaki sushi, hand-rolled sushi, is so crisp and fresh, it surprised me with joy. The thoughtfull little subtleties like the GF soy, tamari, using droppers as dispensers reflect the careful attention to details at Nokko House. Whether it's for nice Japanese whiskey, or yummy tempura, make this place a regular visit.

Overall great experience, if you are looking for a quaint taste of Japanese cuisine this will be the place for you. The prices are reasonable, but for what you are getting it is not filling for a person like me. I would always recommend getting the 3 or 4 roll platter as you are able to taste salad, miso, and edamame with that platter. The Kirin ichiban on draft was fantastic!

Gem of a place! Cozy atmosphere and excellent food. From the owner of Okome House, this is a lovely addition to the neighborhood. The menu is very mindful offering vegetarian and vegan options. The use of compostable wrappings to serve the tamaki is a nice touch!

This place was amazing. The cocktails were unique and refreshing, the hand rolls were amazing, and the caulini tempura with curry spice were incredible. Our server was wonderful. She was passionate about the food, and explained the cocktails and the food so well. I highly recommend. They also have a great patio!

About

Nokko is a modern Japanese handroll and udon bar in the Kingfield neighborhood of South Minneapolis, tucked into 4747 Nicollet Ave S. Chef-owner Hide Tozawa built the menu around temaki — made-to-order handrolls with the freshest nori possible — and rich udon, eschewing the big-platter sushi format for something more focused and tactile. For plant-based diners, Nokko is unusually well-equipped: seven of its handrolls are fully vegan, including cucumber, avocado, shiitake, and atsuage (fried tofu), all clearly labeled on the menu. About half the total menu can be ordered plant-based. The soy milk mochi for dessert and the miso soup round out a satisfying vegan meal. The space is chic and warm, with intimate seating and thoughtful design. It's a reservation-friendly spot — especially useful on weekends. The craft cocktail program is worth exploring if you're not purely there for the food. Nokko brings a level of refinement to South Minneapolis's dining scene that feels genuinely exciting.
